Description of Courses:
Russian 0210 BEGINNING
INTENSIVE RUSSIAN 8 or 10 credits
A thorough introductory language
course. Emphasis is placed on communicative competence – active
use of new structures in reading, dialogues, free conversation,
and listening comprehension.
Russian 0220 INTERMEDIATE INTENSIVE RUSSIAN 8 or 10
credits
A rigorous presentation of the
basic uses of all nominal and verbal categories: declension of
nouns and adjectives in all cases, singular and plural,
deepening the knowledge of aspect uses, verbs of motion,
conditional sentences, imperatives, indefinite pronouns,
comparison of adjectives, time expressions, prepositional
phrases. Introduction to participles and verbal adverbs.
Emphasis is placed on developing fluency in conversation and to
phraseology on both oral and written levels.
Russian 0230 ADVANCED
INTENSIVE RUSSIAN 8 or 10 Credits
This intensive course has two
components: The first, conversation, will consist of the
preparation of dialogues and in-class discussions in Russian.
The second, grammar, will be based on an accompanying grammar
text, and short compositions that draw on material covered in
the text, as well as on videotapes from contemporary Russian
media. Course objectives are: to develop an active vocabulary in
practical, everyday topics, particularly those topics which will
prepare students for travel to Russia in order to refine
composition skills. Readings in Russian literature are also a
part of this course.
Russian 0240 FOURTH-YEAR INTENSIVE RUSSIAN 8 or
10 Credits
This course
offers a rapid review of more complex aspects of Russian grammar
before concentrating on a selective survey of works from
contemporary Russian literature and culture. Classroom
activities focus on discussions of the assigned works, reports
on the authors and the cultural context, and presentations on
various aspects of the texts. Homework assignments include
summaries of the assigned readings, short essays on the authors,
and stylistic analyses of the texts. The goals of this course
are three: vocabulary expansion; enhancement of writing and
speaking skills; and the acquisition of a basic knowledge of
contemporary Russian literature and culture |
